New Continental greets drivers with lights and welcome mats.

The 2017 Lincoln Continental will be upping the "approach detection" game for all automakers when it goes on sale later this year. The slick new feature began with the MKC crossover, and we predict it will spread to the rest of the lineup.

When the driver approaches with the key fob, the Conti projects Lincoln badge-shaped welcome mats onto the ground underneath the front doors, the door handles glow in a hue that complements the exterior color, its LED head- and taillights warm up and start button pulses with light. If it has auto-folding mirrors, they also pop out.

Additionally, Lincoln says, the ambient interior lights activate in sequence, "enveloping the interior in a soft light to prepare or place any personal items before driving."
